Why indi is different from an app-first coding robot
Sphero says a device is not required to use indi. The included color tiles communicate instructions such as turns, speed changes and other behaviors, which lets a child experience programming as a physical route before learning an app interface. That makes the first lesson about sequencing and prediction rather than menus or account setup.
What children actually practice
Sphero currently highlights color identification, sequencing, decomposition, pattern recognition, cause and effect, directionality and problem solving. The strongest learning happens when the adult asks the child to predict the full route before starting the robot and then explain which tile caused an unexpected result.
The Student Kit includes one indi robot, 20 durable color tiles, 15 beginner programming challenge cards, a carrying case, charging cable, quick-start materials and decorative stickers. Those challenge cards provide structure without forcing every session into one fixed puzzle.

How the optional app changes the learning runway
When the child is ready, Sphero Edu Jr lets them reprogram how indi responds to the color tiles using simplified block coding. Sphero says the app can customize movements, sounds and colors. This creates a useful progression: first understand that a color represents an instruction, then learn that the child can change the instruction itself.
Who should skip indi?
Skip it if the child already wants more advanced robotics, construction, text coding or a broad sensor platform. indi is strongest as an early computational-thinking system. For older children, compare mBot2, Turing Tumble or Spintronics Act One depending on whether the goal is robotics, computer logic or circuit reasoning.
Safety and setup
Follow Sphero's current handling and charging guidance, keep the charging cable in good condition, and supervise younger children during setup. If your family enables Sphero Edu Jr, review the device permissions and account setup before handing over the device.
Verdict
Sphero indi has a clear reason to exist: it lets early learners practice real computational-thinking habits without making a screen the starting point. The physical tile system makes programs visible, and the optional app extends the same robot into beginner block coding later. It is a strong fit for families who want a low-reading first coding experience with a defined next step.
