LEGO Pokémon Trainer's Buggy with Squirtle 72156 Review

Squirtle's buggy is one of the strongest value expansions in the line because the $29.99 box has a real vehicle play loop even without electronics: steering, water-stud shooting and rescue-style stories.

What children build

The set centers on a beach-style buggy with a hinged chassis, two water stud shooters and storage, plus a posable Squirtle, pretend remote control, Poké Ball and a small grill scene. It creates a clearer repeat-play loop than a display-first expansion.

SMART Play requirement

Two SMART Tags are included, but the SMART Brick is not. A Brick borrowed from an All-in-One set activates responsive reactions. Families entering the ecosystem for the first time should compare the Pikachu starter before assuming the $29.99 price includes electronics.

Screen use

The child does not need a phone or tablet for physical play or SMART reactions. Adult app use can matter for Brick settings and firmware. We describe this as screen-free core play rather than completely app-free ownership.

Best fit

This is a strong age-7+ choice for a Squirtle fan who likes vehicles and action mechanisms. It also stands up better without a SMART Brick than some smaller character-only Compatible sets.

Strengths

  • 320 pieces for $29.99
  • Vehicle and water-shooter play
  • Two SMART Tags
  • Currently available at LEGO US

Tradeoffs

  • No SMART Brick included
  • Small water studs can get lost
  • Electronic startup cost is higher for new buyers
  • Not a standalone AI toy

Verdict

Among the value Compatible sets, Squirtle's Buggy is one of the easiest to recommend for physical play first and SMART interaction second.
