LEGO Pokémon Charmander & Geodude Cavern Clash 72157 Review

Cavern Clash is a compact $19.99 action set built around a hidden crystal, Geodude attacks and two tagged Pokémon. The mechanical scene works on its own; SMART reactions need a Brick from another set.

What children do

The Trainer explores a cave with Charmander, encounters Geodude, dodges a disc-shooter attack and uses a lever to break rocks apart and reveal a hidden crystal. That gives the set more physical cause-and-effect than its small piece count suggests.

SMART Play requirement

Charmander and Geodude both incorporate SMART Tags. The responsive sound-and-light layer requires a SMART Brick from an All-in-One set, which LEGO does not sell separately. Families starting from zero should compare Pikachu 72164 first.

Value and age fit

At age 6+, this is one of the younger-entry Compatible sets and one of the least expensive. The physical action functions make it more defensible as a standalone $19.99 gift than an expansion whose value depends mostly on electronic responses.

Screen use

No child-facing screen is required for the physical build or SMART interaction. Adult app use can still matter for updates to an already-owned Brick. We do not classify SMART Play as generative AI.

Strengths

  • $19.99 current price
  • Two tagged Pokémon
  • Mechanical rock and crystal features
  • Age 6+ entry point

Tradeoffs

  • No SMART Brick
  • 198-piece build is compact
  • Projectile pieces need care
  • Interactive system cost is higher for new buyers

Verdict

For an age-6+ Charmander fan, Cavern Clash is one of the better low-cost physical expansions because the mechanical play does not disappear when the SMART Brick is absent.
